Description:
The Indian Ocean plays a vital role in regulating the local and global climate, and the processes that determine the Indian Ocean's physical, chemical and biological state and air-sea interaction with the overlying atmosphere are distributed into various spatio-temporal scales. However, coupled and standalone ocean models used for seasonal, extended, and future climate projections consistently show systematic bias to simulate the Indian Ocean state. After considering the importance of in-situ ocean observations, to understand the ocean environment and to utilize them for operational oceanography through better representation of these processes in the ocean model, a large number of in-situ ocean observation network has been maintained in the Indian Ocean coastal and open ocean waters by INCOIS during last two decades, through Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) funding under the project Ocean Observation Network (OON). The different platform under OON includes the moored met-ocean data buoys (Argo floats, Expendable bathythermograph/expendable conductivity temperature depth, drifters, INCOIS Flux mooring, ship-board Automated weather stations, Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler network along the Indian coast, current meter array in the equatorial Indian Ocean, wave rider buoys, Tide Gauges along the coast of India, open ocean tsunami monitoring Bottom Pressure Recorder. While designing the OON, an effort was made in such a way that the platform under OON should complement both the present and planned Indian Ocean Observing System (IndOOS), a multi-national collaboration programme focused on maintaining a sustained basin-scale observing system. In addition, INCOIS has been conducting a dedicated process-specific observation campaign in the north Indian Ocean to document the small scale turbulent mixing processes. Besides, under MoES Deep Ocean Mission, INCOIS is maintaining meridional glider transect to monitor the deep ocean parameters.
