Presenter: Virginia Selz (NOAA Climate Program Office)
Description:
The NOAA Climate Program Office, Climate Observations and Monitoring (COM) program supports extramural research aimed at developing and analyzing synthesis datasets to advance climate understanding and climate monitoring and modeling applications. Given NOAA’s vast observational and data holdings, synthesis studies considering the integration of multiple observing platforms are critical to translate knowledge and integrate data from existing observations into improved observing and monitoring products, and reduced biases and uncertainties in climate and ocean models. Recently, the COM Program partnered with CPO’s Climate Variability Predictability Program and the Global Ocean Monitoring and Observing Program, on the topics of ocean synthesis dataset and data product development related to 1) air-sea interactions and 2) biogeochemical processes for advancements in climate observing, monitoring, and modeling. The COM program funded five projects in 2020 and 12 projects were funded through partnerships in 2021 for a total of 17 projects. Projects integrate data across multiple platforms, and will provide valuable synthesis datasets to the broader science community. Here, we will present the topics of the funded projects, expected scientific outcomes, and possible future programmatic opportunities to advance coordination and collaboration among the ocean observing and modeling communities.
